Undergraduate Intern AMI IT
Job Description
The Naperville Electric Department is seeking a self-motivated Information Technology intern looking to add meaningful value to an Electric Utility’s IT operations. The Intern will get the opportunity to learn how a formal IT department operates gaining experience in networking, data centers, cybersecurity, system/server administration, and end-user application support, while understanding how the utilities different departments operate within a unified leadership. The hours are Monday - Friday (7 am - 3:30 pm), mid-May to mid-August. This position is an excellent opportunity to network with City employees and to learn and work for a very progressive organization.
Duties
- Cable Labeling: Organize and label cables in server rooms and workstations to maintain a tidy and manageable IT environment.
- Removing Deprecated Hardware: Assist in identifying and safely removing old or obsolete hardware from the network
- Hardware Upgrades: Help replace old hardware with new, upgraded equipment, including installing and configuring new devices.
- Managing Old Equipment for Sale: Prepare decommissioned equipment for sale or donation, including data wiping and inventory listing.
- Asset Inventory Management: Update the asset inventory by removing records of old or disposed equipment to keep the asset management system up-to-date.
- Network/Security Monitoring: Assist in monitoring network and security system for unusual activities like unauthorized access attempts, anomalous software activity, potential malware infections, and other threats.
- Vulnerability Assessments: Augment the team in helping conduct regular vulnerability scans on the utility networks and systems to identify security weaknesses and assist in preliminary analysis of scan results. Additionally augment the teams effort to perform patch management and mitigation of vulnerabilities through system patching. This will include tracking, downloading, testing, and deploying patches to ensure systems are up to date and secure against known vulnerabilities.
- Research and Reports: Conduct research on current cybersecurity threats and trends. Prepare reports or presentation summarizing findings, new threats, and technological advancements in security,
- Documentation: Assist current staff in helping maintain documentation related to security procedures, configurations, incident response activities.
Qualifications
- Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited Computer Science, Information systems, Information Technology, or Cybersecurity program.
- Must be able to work in a data center environment
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Must be able to professionally communicate with customers.
- Must be able to work independently and be motivated to learn.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Have a valid State of Illinois Class D Driver's License. Applicants should possess a driving history with no moving violations for at least the last twelve (12) months.
