Undergraduate Administrative Intern

The Village of Elk Grove is seeking an undergraduate college student to participate in a summer internship program with the Village Manager’s Office during the summer of 2023. This is a paid position, which will provide a front-row seat to the fast-paced and dynamic world of local government. Interns will be based in the Village Manager’s Office and will learn about careers in local government through active participation in ongoing projects and programs.

The Village Manager’s Office oversees the day-to-day operations of the Village and is responsible for implementing the policy decisions made by the Village Board. In addition to overseeing the operations of all Departments, the Village Manager’s Office coordinates special events and projects, manages communications to the community, and spearheads economic development efforts.

In addition to work in the Village Manager’s Office, interns will get behind-the-scenes insights into the operations of our police and fire departments as well as major infrastructure projects, fiscal management, human resources, construction permitting, community events, and more. Interns will be invited to experience all aspects of local government through projects, tours, events, and shadowing with all Village Departments. Interns will also get to experience the public policy process through public meetings and work with community stakeholders.

Elk Grove Village is located in the Chicago suburbs, bordering O’Hare International Airport, and is home to 33,000 residents and 5,600 businesses. The intern will have the opportunity to learn firsthand how Elk Grove Village works to ensure the success of the largest business park in North America and the health of our local economy.

The Undergraduate Administrative Intern will report to the Assistant Village Manager/Director of Communications. The intern will gain experience by working on projects that impact and benefit the community. Duties of the position may include:
·        Create social media campaigns to increase awareness of Village programs and operations
·        Conduct research on ongoing policy issues and draft associated letters and reports.
·        Learn about the value of employee wellness by proposing and administering a wellness program.
·        Assist with the coordination and operation of special events with attendance in the tens of thousands
·        Learn about the role of local government in sustainability and solid waste through the planning and operation of special recycling programs. 
·        Serve as part of the Village’s economic development team through participation in the Business Ambassador program.
·        Learn how state legislation impacts local government operations through various legal requirements.
·         Experience the planning/zoning process that regulates land use for residential and commercial properties.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must be a 2023 High School Graduate or currently enrolled in an undergraduate institution.
  • Interest in a career in government and/or public administration.
  • A valid Illinois Driver’s License and a Safe Driving Record
  • Ability to work 5 days, 37.5 hours per week
  • Interns must provide their own transportation to and from work.

PROGRAM DATES: May 22 – August 18, 2023
HOURS OF WORK: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am- 5:00 pm (37.5 hours per week). Interns will also assist in a recycling program on the morning of Saturday, June 3. Additional opportunities to work at events/meetings may be offered on evenings and weekends.
COMPENSATION: Starting at $14.25 /hr
