Director of Research

The Director of Research is a critical role at CharacterStrong given the importance of research informing the development of our signature products (logic models, content, core activities) as well as the process of gathering defensible evidence on our signature products. The Director of Research will be primarily responsible for overseeing and coordinating research efforts, including designing and conducting randomized controlled trials on signature products, partnering in our ongoing improvement research using quantitative and qualitative data gathering, gathering practice-based evidence, and developing research briefs that inform product development. This position also includes the ability to develop strategic partnerships with school systems and other researchers to conduct value-added research projects, including the potential of applying for grants to fund projects. The Research Director must be adept at research and analysis and possess excellent writing to submit peer-reviewed manuscripts, submit proposals for consideration of national registries or lists of evidence-based practices (e.g., CASEL), editing and oral communication skills. The Director must be organized, a problem solver, self-directed, and demonstrate leadership and initiative, while at the same time being a committed team player who is able to see the bigger picture with regard to the CharacterStrong’s visions and goals. The Research Director reports directly to the Chief Development Officer - Dr. Clay Cook - who is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. 

Qualifications
  • PhD in education, psychology or related discipline
  • At least 5 years experience conducting and organizing school-based research projects and publishing peer-reviewed research 
  • Deep understanding of the educational context 
  • Skills with both quantitative and qualitative data, analysis, and synthesis
  • Innovative mindset regarding the development of research-informed products 
  • Knowledge of Google Suite, Qualtrics, and data analytic software
  • Strong communication skills via phone and email
  • Proven creative problem-solving approach and strong analytical skills
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively
  • High energy, positive attitude, and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Open to feedback, coaching, willingness to try new things
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities
  • Lead research projects, including design, data collection, overseeing analysis, and write-up of findings
  • Research briefs on topics relevant to our existing products, future products, and customers
  • Collaboration with other CS Departments as needed (e.g,. Curriculum, Marketing, Sales, Professional Learning)
  • Partner in ongoing improvement research process to identify issues around usability, implementation, student engagement, and effectiveness and solve for those issues through designing improvements
  • Present occasionally at conferences to demonstrate demonstrate evidence supporting CS products
  • Recruit and communicate with school system partners

Hours & Pay:
  • $100,000 base salary, commensurate with experience
  • Retirement allocation is provided in the first year, formal 401k plan option after 12 months
