Paid Research Assistant / Community Canvasser

The Chicago Congregations Project seeks to hire research assistants who are currently residing in Chicago to look for and document religious congregations as they go about their daily life, such as commuting to/from work or school, traveling to a store, or visiting family or friends.

Chicago Congregations Project
Is a social science research study to generate the most comprehensive list of congregations in Chicago to date. Current lists of congregations significantly undercount them throughout the city, and thus they are limited for examining the role of faith-based organizations in community life. As a research assistant, you will contribute to gathering unprecedented data on the diversity and importance of religious communities in Chicago.

Benefits
  • Gain hands-on experience working on a social scientific research project.
  • Earn income as you go about your normal, day-to-day routine.

Who We Need
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate, master’s, or graduate students (or recent graduates).
  • Organized, curious, observant individuals who are able to work independently and with little supervision.
  • Candidates should live in, work in, or frequently visit (to see family or friends, for instance) one of the 77 Chicago Community Areas.

Research assistants need not attend local congregations nor personally religious (though they can be). The only requirement is that you are a keen social observer. No field of study is required but preference will be given to students/recent graduates in the social sciences or religious studies.

Who We Are
Notre Dame Sociology Professor Kraig Beyerlein and Rutgers University Professor/Notre Dame Center for the Study of Religion and Society Faculty Affiliate Ricardo Martínez-Schuldt, along with Matthew Sisk of Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, are leading the Chicago Congregations Project and collaborating with the Martin Marty Center at the University of Chicago Divinity School and researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
