Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, this position will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing the City’s Primetime Preschool and Camp Clarita programs in addition to coordinating the inclusion process for individuals with varying abilities in city-wide programs.  The Primetime Preschool program serves approximately 320 children during the school year, Camp Clarita serves approximately 4,500 campers during the summer, and approximately 50 inclusion participants are served annually. The anticipated work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and occasional nights and weekends, based on operational needs.
 
Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Assists with hiring, scheduling, supervising, and training approximately 100 part-time, seasonal, and temporary staff throughout the year
  • Supports people with disabilities so they can fully participate in City-offered Recreation and Community Services programs; coordinates and meets with parents, creates or purchases supplemental materials to aide participants in inclusive participation or instructs staff on how to create materials
  • Provides customer service to parents of program participants and the general public, which includes providing accurate information on policies and procedures, and effectively addressing customer issues and concerns in a timely manner
  • Plans and implements assigned programs as well as special event activities; develops and monitors assigned budgets
  • Documents the progress and effectiveness of specific and assigned programs offered by the City; develops and presents recommendations for additions, deletions, or revisions to programs; justifies recommendations with appropriate background data
  • Prepares various reports and makes presentations to the Recreation and Community Services division and/or Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission, as needed
  • Oversees enrollments, participant’s paperwork, waitlists, and processes monthly/weekly payments for participants
  • Uses computer applications to create and update forms; performs record retention activities, maintains and tracks program data; prepares memos and reports; utilizes registration software and inputs class and program information, processes refunds/transfers, and reserves facilities
  • Attends City trainings and conducts staff meetings and trainings
  • Performs website management ensuring current information is showcased
  • Establishes positive working relationships with City employees, the public, volunteers, and participants
Education and Experience:
·        High School diploma or GED equivalent
·        Two years of experience in the field of Recreation and Community Services, preferably overseeing preschool or day camp programs
·        Associate’s degree is highly desirable
·        Experience working with the special needs community is highly desirable
·        Supervisory or leadership experience is highly desirable
·        Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered
·        Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver license
·        Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months of hire, the following certifications: American Red Cross CPR, AED, and First Aid certification and Instructor certification, Crisis Prevention Institute training and certification 
Knowledge and Abilities:
·        Knowledge of youth recreational programs and special events (child development and day camp highly desirable)
·        Knowledge of Inclusion practices in a recreation and community center setting
·        Knowledge of a variety of disabilities, including, but not limited to: ADD/ADHD, Autism, Behavioral, Developmental Delays, Down Syndrome, Emotional, Hearing/Vision Impairments, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
·        Knowledge of social, health, and legal needs of individuals with special needs
·        Good understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
·        Strong conflict management skills and the ability to resolve issues that may involve upset parents
·        Strong leadership skills and the ability to direct, train, and mentor part-time employees
·        Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both verbally and in writing, in one-on-one settings, when giving formal presentations to large groups of people, and when composing memos and letters
·        Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize daily workload, coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, be flexible with changing priorities, and meet time-sensitive deadlines
·        Strong fiscal management skills and the ability to perform simple mathematical calculations, and maintain and track budget; maintain program records
·        Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those connected in the performance of required duties
·        Strong computer skills and the ability to be resourceful with website management and computer programs, such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Rec 1 (registration software)
·        Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to be an assertive, responsible problem-solver and quick learner, while being a team player
·        Strong data-management skills and the ability to track and monitor program data, supplies, and inventory levels
 
Knowledge and Abilities (continued):
·        Strong analytical skills and the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of current programs/offerings, research ideas for new offerings, and develop recommendations for new and/or enhanced programs/offerings
·        Strong work ethic and the ability to work autonomously and within a collaborative team
·        Ability to demonstrate a high level of ethics, integrity, and professionalism
·        Ability to work nights and weekends on occasion
·        Ability to lift and drag both indoor office and outdoor field equipment weighing 25 pounds or more

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California
Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
 
Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees’ Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
