PTS Crossing Guard/Substitute Crossing Guard

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team with the City’s Recreation and Community Services division as a part-time seasonal (PTS) and/or substitute Crossing Guard. This position provides an opportunity to serve your Community by helping our children get to school safely. This position will work under the leadership of the City of Santa Clarita Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinators and is not an employee of the school district. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient crossing of the street by schoolchildren and other pedestrian traffic within the immediate vicinity of school crosswalks/zones.

PTS Crossing Guards
This position requires the flexibility to work Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in two different shifts, at various school locations within the City of Santa Clarita. Schedule may vary depending on the location and school, typical hours approximately 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Approximately 15 hours worked per week plus additional hours for trainings and meetings.

PTS Substitute Crossing Guards
Selected candidates will be added to a substitute Crossing Guard pool on an as-needed basis to fill in for absent Crossing Guards to work Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in two different shifts, at various school locations within the City of Santa Clarita.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Works outdoors and provides overall safety of school-age children in the assigned area by assisting pedestrians with street crossing
• Assisting school children in crossing busy intersections by halting vehicles through the use of mechanical signals and/or hand-held stop signs
• Maintaining order and safety practices among children waiting to cross the street at street crossing points
• Permitting street crossing only when safe to do so
• Observes conditions in traffic that may pose a potential safety hazard and communicates hazards to the Crossing Guard office and/or the crossing guard lead
• Maintains flexibility to work a split-shift schedule
• Adheres to program policies, procedures and safe work practices
• Attends meetings and training sessions
• Adheres to Los Angeles Department of Public Health guidelines set forth
• Other duties, as directed by the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinator

Knowledge and Abilities
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to effectively respond to general questions and issues in a professional and timely manner
• Creative problem-solving as it relates to working with the public
• Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate verbal information clearly
• Strong work ethic and the ability to handle difficult situations with professionalism and good judgement
• Ability to provide appropriate knowledge of traffic laws and uses clear and proper traffic management signals
• Ability to work effectively, compassionately, and positively with youth, adults, and staff
• Ability to report to assignment consistently
• Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement
• Ability to meet physical requirements, including audio, visual, and mobility aspects
• Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment up to 25 pounds may be required

In compliance with the California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
