Environmental Health Sanitarian-Retail Emphasis

DATCP currently has an opening for an Environmental Health Sanitarian-Retail Emphasis position. This position is field based and will be headquartered in one of the following counties: Brown, Marinette, Oconto, or Shawano.

Position Summary

This Environmental Health Sanitarian position is responsible for enforcement of food & health safety laws, administrative codes, regulations and standards governing food safety under the authority of Wisconsin Statues. The employee is responsible for: on-site evaluation, inspection, and documentation of sanitary conditions and durability of facilities, equipment, and/or product; application of codes and statutes; providing technical consultation and educational services to industry representatives, business owners/operators, agents, local and state officials, the general public, etc. Based upon evaluation and/or inspection findings staff are responsible to prepare reports and take or recommend enforcement action as outlined in applicable codes and statutes. This includes the ability to issue, deny, or in some instance issue summary closure orders when an imminent health threat is found.

This position specializes in regulating recreational businesses, including: restaurants, recreational/educational camps, campgrounds, vending operations, public swimming facilities, lodging, etc.

Salary Information

The entry level position is in schedule/range 15-04 with a starting pay of $26.25-$27.25 per hour ($54,600-$56,680 annually). The senior level position is in schedule/range 15-03 with a starting pay of $28.20-$29.40 ($58,656-$61,152 annually). This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

  • Due to its job requirements, this position is not eligible for telecommuting.
  • A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DATCP sponsorship) at the time of application.
  • A valid driver’s license OR the ability to provide one’s own transportation for work purposes, including automobile insurance, is required.
  • Possess physical abilities to climb and work at elevated heights such as on catwalks.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Through use of sight and hearing must be able observe physical surroundings.
  • Must have the ability to complete outdoor job activities 12 months of the year. The employee will encounter inclement weather and extreme temperatures.


Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidate will have the following:
  • A Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) certification OR have the eligibility to obtain the Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or the NEHA REHS/RS within three years of hire (for eligibility requirements, please see the hyperlinks below).
In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:
  • Training and/or experience with regulatory inspection, and/or quality assurance.
  • Training and/or experience with inspection of retail food, lodging, camps, and public pool facilities.
  • Experience applying and/or interpreting federal and/or state laws, rules, regulations, standards, and/or policies.
  • Experience performing inspections, evaluations, sampling, and/or utilizing investigational techniques in retail food and recreational facilities.
