PTS College Intern, Community Preservation

Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a challenging and meaningful work experience for college students. The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations. We provide real world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita.

The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to projects within the Community Preservation Division related to the Community Task Force on Homelessness and the items contained in the Community Plan to Address Homelessness, as well as other homelessness-related assignments.

SALARY: $16.67 - $26.69/hour
OPENING DATE: 08/02/2021
CLOSING DATE: 08/16/2021

Up to 40 hours per week is preferred. The anticipated duration of the internship is approximately five months but could be extended.

DESCRIPTION/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with the implementation and tracking of goals, objectives and priorities identified in
the Community Plan to Address Homelessness
- Regularly updates the City’s Homeless Coordination webpage in a timely manner
- Coordinates communication between members of the Task Force; organizes monthly Task
Force meetings and prepares monthly agendas; creates meeting minutes
- Creates informative materials for the public with updates on actions taken by the Task Force
- Prepares materials such as charts, graphics, and illustrations for presentations
- Actively researches developments in the Los Angeles County’s Homeless Initiative
- Analyzes legislation pertaining to regional and local homelessness
- Actively researches and recommends local, regional, state, and federal grant opportunities,
including Measure H funding opportunities; develops funding and grant proposals
- Attends monthly Executive Committee meetings
- Attends local and regional meetings and webinars related to homeless initiatives, best
practices, education, and coordination
- Completes data analysis, prepares and presents reports and recommendations
- Reviews and responds to questions and/or complaints from residents related to local homeless issues and provides information accordingly
- Establishes positive working relationships with City employees, outside agencies, and the
public

Education and Experience
If you are currently an undergraduate student, graduate student, or recent graduate with a field of study of Public Administration, Social Work, Political Science, or a related field, and are interested in gaining meaningful hands-on work experience at the local government level, this opportunity may be for you.

- and public inquiries and requests
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with outside agencies, City staff, and the public
- Strong work ethic and the ability to be self-motived, positive, and exercise good judgment
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate as part of a team
- Strong computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
and other computer programs to generate letters, spreadsheets, presentations, and reports
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce work that is accurate and complete
- Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds
- Valid Class C California Driver's License

Part-time, temporary and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will.
As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
