Dive Safety Fall Internship

Internship Overview: 
This career learning opportunity is designed to introduce dive program experiences necessary for those looking to pursue a career in aquarium husbandry and running a dive program through an aquarium, university, or research vessel. Interns are responsible for assisting in all aspects of dive operations through hands-on training above and below the water. Interns will also complete a research project to further their understanding and career goals.
 
Learning Objectives: 
  • Identify and explain aquarium dive protocols in various habitats within aquarium industry standards 
  • Practice dive skills including SCUBA and full face mask diving 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of diving concepts such as physics of diving, oxygen administration, etc. 

Responsibilities & Projects: 
  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and values 
  • Partner with staff to fill cylinders, maintain gear, support administrative tasks, and implement current Shedd dive safety protocols 
  • Complete CPR/O2 training if not certified 
  • Along with staff, dive into various habitats for maintenance and husbandry needs 
  • Attend Dive Control Board meetings 
  • Assist staff with maintaining dive records 
  • Collaborate with mentor to identify and complete a project aligning with organizational and professional goals 
  • Other projects as assigned 

Qualifications: 

Fields of Interest: Applicants should have a genuine interest in marine biology and diving related careers. Some coursework in the aquatic sciences, dive experience or hobbyist experience preferred.
 
Skills/Characteristics: 
  • Open Water certification or higher from an internationally recognized agency. Rescue certification preferred. 
  • Completion of a dive physical and swim test prior to diving in habitats.  
  • Swim test includes: swim underwater without swim aids for a distance of 25 yards without surfacing, swim 400 yards in less than 12 minutes without swimming aids, tread water for 10 minutes, transport another person a distance of 25 yards in the water, and dive to a depth of 10 ft to retrieve a weight
  • Cost of dive physical is covered by the aquarium
  • Proof of at least 30 logged dives 
  • Must be able to carry 50 lbs 
  • Strong communication skills 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks 
  • Excellent watermanship skills 
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED. 

Time Commitment: 
  • Minimum of 16 hours and maximum of 40 hours per week 
  • Minimum of 2 months 
  • Availability within a Tuesday through Saturday schedule preferred
  • Set schedule based on intern availability.
