Engage and Educate the Public on the Pisgah Ranger District FS-USA-56

Improve the Pisgah's public information by designing kiosks, building maps, creating engaging app content, and so much more. Pisgah Ranger District is one of the most heavily used areas in the National Forest system and this position will help us to improve visitor experiences of all kinds.

This position will support our existing Visitor Services team on the Pisgah Ranger District primarily by developing tools, creating graphics, and writing content for a variety of media forms.

The Pisgah Ranger District is visited by millions of people annually from diverse backgrounds. This position has the special opportunity to make an impact on those visitor experiences by creating relevant, engaging, and important content that will be displayed on kiosks, signs, virtually, and on the National Forest Explorer App. The work produced by this position will likely be seen by millions of visitors for years to come.

This position will get the opportunity to know a diverse array of Forest Service staff and partners through interactions that will influence the content they produce, while also providing them unique access to the greater ecosystem of a complex Forest. The Pisgah Ranger District is only one district of Pisgah National Forest, but it encompasses noteworthy destinations including Looking Glass Falls, Black Balsam, Looking Glass Rock, Sliding Rock, and the Cradle of Forestry among others. The District encompasses half a million acres with 400 miles of trails and a wide range of recreation opportunities.

Applicants should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and team players. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator is preferred. A history in mapping is also preferred, but not required. Interns must provide their own computer with software and be able to work virtually.

Positions will be supervised primarily out of the Recreation Division, specifically by the Volunteer and Partnerships Coordinator, Natalie Lester (She/Her) and Visitor Center Manager, Mandy Harmon (She/Her).

VSFS interns will be signed up under Individual Volunteer Agreements (OF-301a). All VSFS interns are required to record their hours worked on this project and will be reported in the Volunteer & Service Programs Accomplishments Database (VSReports), the Forest Service’s official national reporting database.
