Program Intern

After School Matters provides Chicago high school teens with high quality, after-school and summer opportunities to explore and develop their talents while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond. Since 1991, more than 350,000 teens have participated in our hands-on, project-based after-school and summer programs in the arts, communications and leadership, sports and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Programs take place at locations throughout the city including Chicago public high schools, Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library locations, community organizations, downtown at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, in Belmont Cragin at our Michael and Karyn Lutz Center for After School Matters, and in the Pullman community at the new Gately Center for After School Matters. Summary of Position:
Help teens explore their interests this summer! In this position, your role will be to ensure participants in After School Matters’ Summer 2021 “Challenges” have a positive experience during their interviews, enrollment process, and Challenges activities, and throughout the Summer 2021 program session. “Challenges” are activities aimed at guiding teen participants through the exploration of their interests and how to pursue them in college and in their future careers. The Program Intern will also support with identifying exemplars to highlight in marketing communications.

These positions will take place fully remotely. There are 20 vacancies. These temporary positions are scheduled to work up to 30 hours per week.
  • About 5 positions are scheduled to start around May 17, 2021 and conclude around August 20, 2021.
  • About 15 positions are scheduled to start around June 14, 2021 and conclude around August 20, 2021.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative and Program Support:
  • Support Program Management team with creating content and execution plans for weekly “challenges”
  • Support with creating rubrics to evaluate teen submissions
  • Tracking and enter teen data into various spreadsheets and databases
  • Email teen participants about enrollment status, and follow up regarding outstanding action items
  • Provide technical support with Google Classrooms, including creating Google classrooms and getting the classrooms ready for weekly meetings and discussions
  • Send weekly communications to teen participants, including reminders and key updates
  • Support Program Management team with identifying key stories and anecdotes from teen participants to highlight in organizational marketing materials.
  • Participate in end-of-summer program reflection sessions and make recommendations for future sessions
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively, respectfully, and courteously communicate with After School Matters teens, staff, and parents via phone, email, and in-person is required
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to use various tools such as online calendars, spreadsheets, etc. is required
  • Ability to prepare clear and thorough written communications that are free of spelling and grammatical errors is required
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook is strongly preferred
  • Experience with online or digital data entry is strongly preferred
  • Google Classroom experience is strongly preferred
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is required
 
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university is required; Education, Youth Development, or Social Work majors are preferred
  • Former participation in After School Matters programs is a bonus but not required
  • Commitment to providing respectful and empathetic customer service is required
