STEM Peer Mentor-SPRING 2021-Student Employment (FWS EXEMPT)

Federal Work Study is intended to help meet the needs of the University, provide University students with financial support in pursuit of their academic goals, develop a positive affiliation and assimilation into the life of the University, and provide opportunities for academic or administrative job experience. Federal Work Study positions exist throughout majority of the functional areas of the University. The job duties and responsibilities of student employees vary greatly and may or may not be related to their field of study.

Federal Work Study Eligibility:
This position does not require (exempt) Federal Work study eligibility

Student employees are not permitted to exceed the total amount of their federal work study award. Supervisors will work with hired student employees to determine a schedule based on the award amount. Once federal work study funds are completely exhausted, students will need to discontinue working. Regardless of federal work study amount, students cannot exceed 10 hours of work per week during the fall and spring semester.

Key Qualifications:
Peer Mentors are students who serve as role models, sources of information for peers, and representatives of both Saint Xavier University and the STEM departments. They will use their leadership skills and good-standing in the SXU community to advise their mentees on anything from help with developing study skills to seeking services from the university. They should be well-acquainted with student support services (i.e. where to get tutoring, academic advising, career services, etc.) and will take advantage of the newly-built STEM Studio as a meeting place. For the Spring 2021 semester, Peer Mentors will use the platform Zoom to meet with peers and facilitate activities. Most importantly, Peer Mentors will foster a sense of community with their group, closing the divide between life at home and the rigors of a STEM education at SXU. This can be accomplished by encouraging study groups, having meaningful conversations and meetings, and being an advocate for their group of mentees. They will make all students feel welcome and continue to promote a sense of belonging throughout their time at SXU.
 
This position enables students to gain valuable experience in communication, leadership, organization, and creativity.
 
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
1.   Junior or Senior students who is majoring in a STEM field.
2.     Reliable and able to commit to a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 15 hours per week.
3.     Be in good standing with the university.
4.     Have a real interest in assisting students with their adjustment to college.
5.     Have a willingness to go the extra mile as an advocate for their mentees and ability to boost students’ confidence in themselves as STEM majors.
6.     Ability to encourage students to see themselves as scientists, mathematicians, and computer scientists.
7.     Be a positive STEM role model.
8.   Demonstrate good communication skills and punctuality.
9.     Preferred Spanish-speaking.
