Under the general management of the Fire Science Internship Program Manager, this position is responsible for responding to requests for emergency assistance and completing a course of study within the Wisconsin Technical College System that culminates in an Associate Degree in Fire Science. The position generally functions at the task level to stabilize emergency incidents.
Interns receive compensation in the form of a stipend of $150.00 per bi-weekly pay period, a tuition reimbursement program, and room and board in our new state-of-the-art facilities. Additional hours of work are available depending on response and assigned responsibilities.
This opportunity is open to current students enrolled in a Fire Science Program who have completed at least 30 credits and have obtained the State of Wisconsin Firefighter 1 certification.
Essential Functions:
- Attend required drills and other in-service training activities.
- Attend external fire service-related courses as approved by the Fire Chief.
- Remain current on topics related to fire prevention and suppression, technical rescue, fire and life safety codes, and public safety education.
- Inspect, operate, and maintain fire apparatus, fire stations and other fire department facilities, grounds, and equipment as assigned.
- Perform hydrant and hose tests as required.
- Acknowledge and respond to dispatched alarms and other calls for emergency assistance.
- Select and don personal protective equipment appropriate to the emergency response.
- Drive and operate fire department vehicles and equipment.
- Communicate with incident commander and other responders via radio.
- Perform search and rescue tasks, as required.
- Perform fire suppression tasks or other related activities, as required.
- Perform salvage and overhaul tasks, as required.
- Inspect and restore personal protective equipment, fire apparatus, facilities, and equipment upon the conclusion of each emergency response.
Other Functions:
- Inspect buildings for potential fire hazards and evaluate compliance with fire prevention ordinances.
- Identify fire regulation violations and issue reports and forms to building owners.
- Instruct the public on fire and life safety topics.
Fire Science Resident Intern - First Year
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent (possessed at the time of appointment).
- Must be at least 17 years of age at the time of applying and at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
Licenses, Certifications, etc.
- Valid driver's license (possessed at the time of application for employment).
- Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license during the entire course of employment.
- Enrolled or accepted in a college Fire Science Program.
- State of Wisconsin entry-level firefighter training (within the probationary period).
- State of Wisconsin Firefighter 1 certification preferred.
Fire Science Resident Intern - Second Year
- Qualifications listed above plus must have completed 30 credits in a Fire Science accredited program.
- State of Wisconsin Firefighter 1 certification is required.
